How it works
- Rotating by 90° or 270° swaps width and height (for example 4000×3000 → 3000×4000). 180° and flips keep the size.
- Flips mirror the picture as you currently see it. Rotating right four times, or applying the same flip twice, gives the original layout again.
- Pixels are moved, not resampled, so there is no loss from rotating; JPEG and WebP are re-saved at 92% quality.
- The phone’s rotation tag (EXIF orientation) is applied once when the image is opened. The result is saved upright without a rotation tag, so it looks the same in every program.
Why does a photo look upright on my phone but sideways elsewhere?
Phones store the picture as the sensor captured it and add a separate tag (EXIF orientation) saying how to turn it for display. Programs that ignore the tag show it sideways. Saving it the right way round here produces an upright image without the tag, so it looks the same everywhere.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image is opened and saved again only inside this browser. It is never sent to a server, and the work pages carry no ads or third-party analytics. When you close the page, the image and the result are cleared from memory.
Is camera information such as location (EXIF) removed?
The image is redrawn and saved through the browser's canvas, so the original camera information is usually not carried into the result. This has not been confirmed for every browser and file, so removal is not guaranteed. If the photo contains sensitive information, check the result with another tool.
Sources and rules
- Canvas toBlob (MDN): How the browser saves an image in a chosen format and quality. If a format is not supported, the real output format is checked and you are told.
- createImageBitmap (MDN): How the image is opened. Rotation information (EXIF orientation) is applied where the browser supports it.
